The only reason I comment on this story about a correlation between horizontal eye exercises and increased creativity … is that I wonder if I have inadvertently gotten a hand up from the effect. About a year ago, I got a second monitor to extend the desktop on my computer at work. I am frequently glancing back & forth from monitor 1 to monitor 2 – left to right to left. It’s very handy. Especially if I want to cheat a little and blog during my free microseconds. And no doubt I strongly favor my right hand. Now. Everything after this sentence doesn’t count because of the possibility of post hoc confirmation bias (which we should all pay more attention to when drawing conclusions – especially from personal experience or anecdotal evidence! I actually have felt more productive overall, and maybe a touch more creative since this time. In fact, I feel happier lately. Weird, huh? Maybe I should thank the boss for this great perq!

Via Hypotyposeis, Peter Kirby’s marvelous resources, Early Christian Writings and Early Jewish Writings are back on line. The former is a priceless resource that exists nowhere else that I know of, even in the form of any single book. The information isn’t as in depth as some of the scholarly works out there, but you won’t match its breadth short of a trip to the library.

Peter Kirby was formerly a contributor at infidels.org, a website serving freethinkers, but he underwent a conversion experience of sorts, and – to the dismay of many – took his web-site down. I don’t know what moved him to put it back up, but I’m grateful that he did. Oh, yeah – he also has a wonderful page summarizing a surprisingly numerous array of theories of the Historical Jesus. Well worth a glance.

And now for the housekeeping note. Anyone who’s paid any attention lately has seen a shift in focus on the smijer side of what used to be smijer & Buck. I’m still a news junkie, but I find I’m much more interested in talking about subjects that aren’t talked to pieces on all the other political blogs and on the TeeVee. That doesn’t mean I won’t kvetch on those subjects going forward – it just means that science and religion are a lot more fun for me, and give me a lot more opportunity to let my mind wander. So, you may see more of this and less of the politics in the near- or even long-term.

Another thing. We’ve got “about the author” pages now. Go look at them!

Another thing – I’m really planning to put more time and energy into this blog. I’d like to see my thoughts and writing mature a bit. So, stay tuned.

I’ve been way out of the loop the last week or two. Last week was a vacation from work, but with two dentist visits, a trip to the DMV and a host of other little errands, it didn’t seem much like a vacation at all. We did round everybody up for a trip to the Ocoee for some whitewater rafting (Buck, we were probably 80 miles north of ya’), so that was nice. Other than that – nada.

I realized how out of the loop I have been when I saw Buck’s latest about the Alison Krauss deal (rude people aside, I know that show kicked ass & I hope you had a good time), and realized that I was reading it four days behind. I don’t think I’ve ever been even a full day behind reading t-t-t. Same with my other regular reads. I’m behind actual months with some.

So, anyway, I managed to cobble together a second session of the Bible class for Sunday, by staying up all night Saturday night – after the rafting trip. This week was on the Apocalyptic Writings. The class covered definitions (apocalypse=revelation; eschatology=foretelling of an/the End), style & characteristics (poetic, employing allegory & symbolism, portraying violence/catastrophe, relaying extraordinary visions), and themes (“last call” to repentance, final judgment). We mentioned, in passing, the vast collection of non-canonical apocalyptic literature, and hit the high points of Isaiah, Ezekial, Daniel and Revelation. There was an extremely brief speculation about what needs the apocalyptic literature might have met in its original audiences. There was a brief discussion of why people are perennially fascinated by apocalyptic notions and literature – or rather of the fact that they are and why it was outside the scope of the class to speculate about such things. We closed it all out with an overview of interpretive schemes: Preterist vs. futurist and all the -millenialisms. You know, it came together kind of on a shoestring, but I think it was just about as good as it could have been, even if I had spent months on it. Ummm…. If I do say so myself.

Now I have to be ready to hold the next session next Sunday morning. This will be the least interesting by dint of subject matter so far, so wish me luck. Maybe I’ll just run through it Joe Pesci style (thanks RW). Anyway – that’s just one more thing to do instead of keeping up with the projects I started a year or two ago.

Peace out.

As promised, here I am, back again this Monday. I’m afraid this will mostly be all about me, and my weekend, and I honestly can’t blame you if you don’t care. I mainly only care about my own. I will say, before I insist my feelings won’t be hurt if you navigate away to something more fun, or interesting, or whatever, that one of the highlights was Sunday Morning, giving the first session in a Bible study course at my church. There were only four people in attendance besides myself, but I thought it went very well. My hope is to make this a workshop that will respectfully challenge and inform most people who come to it, whether they come from a liberal or conservative religious background, or from none at all. The idea is not to settle all the big questions, but to settle what little questions can be settled, and be aware of the rest of them, aware of a diversity of perspectives (fairly presented) of thinking on them, and to be able to responsibly approach these questions and have dialogue with people who may have different answers to them.

Ok, the rest is purely personal, so I fully expect that I’m writing to myself at this point. Saturday morning, I went atop Edler Mountain for a ride along the reservoir road. I got stuck. A car came by – usually this isn’t a big deal, but this time I guess I just panicked – and off I came. There aren’t any climbing on points once you leave the parking lot (in the parking lot, I can back up against a curb to steady the wheel and can get by without a vertical support!) Sometimes, with a determined effort, I can get back on without assistance, but not Saturday. I worked myself to death. Finally a slow bicyclist (the kind who has a small child with her) came by and let me us her bicycle for support and I was off again. I’ll tell ya – a 2 mile ride on rough black-top compares with a 6 mile ride on smooth concrete.

The rest of Saturday was spent mowing grass and working on the Sunday morning project. Sunday morning Sunday School was not what it should have been. Only two students (during the sci-fi cons around town, the church strangely empties), and nothing prepared for them (I cheated them in favor of the Bible class really). Then some other stuff I won’t relate, more mowing – and by the way – is it just my weakness or unwillingness to bleed that makes me unable to put the belt on a self-propelled drive of a lawn mower? Anyway, I pushed it. And last night at the Local to watch the Mollies, with a mostly convalesced shoulder on Michael, my friend, the mandolinist. This was great fun as always, and the last number I stayed for was one I haven’t heard them do before, but that I enjoy when I hear it on Sunday afternoon Celtic music on the radio: Queen of Argyll… great stuff.

Anyway – pretty good weekend. Hope yours was too, as will be all of our weeks ahead.

“Boredom overtook him, and he began to speak.”
– Kenny Rogers, on the Gambler

Buck, 282 isn’t a bad plateau. And remember, a plateau is a plateau – if you get the itch to shed some more, give it some time and tweak the activity level up a calorie or two. I live my life jumping between plateaus… often as not, jumping backward to previous ones. I’m kind of at one now, where I feel I’m maxed out on time and energy, and still not doing what I’d like to be doing in a lot of ways – and still bored enough to make videos like this – another use for the MonoWheel:

Camera man’s comment, not audible here, was “if you can’t ride it, eat it.”

I think that you all are owed a smoking update, but I won’t bore you too much.

Sure enough the second week is tougher (especially since that’s when I ditched the magic meds – probably shouldn’t have). Sure enough, it isn’t really much of a big deal any more. I jones from time to time, but it passes easily & quickly and the bulk of the time I don’t even think about it. I guess it’s been a month now – I haven’t been doing a good job counting. If I forget an update, please assume the best. I promise to jump on-line & confess if things go awry.

This is the promised weekly update. It’s now been seven days, and the fact is that, with the miracle drug, I have to be reminded that I am in the middle of quitting. Withdrawals are minimal, cravings are nil. I had a couple of rough spots here and there, but nothing like the first quit, which was cold turkey.

I had the dream a couple of times early on – the one where you light up for one reason or another and then drown in guilt.

I’ve had oodles of extra energy, but no particular difficulty finding ways to apply it.

The toothache has mostly subsided. I have some antibiotics & I think that will get me through until I can get it taken care of.

What else is there to say? Until next check-in.

Just like last time, day 2 was a little tougher than day 1. If I remember, week 2 is probably tougher than week 1.

But the wonder-drug is making a difference. A lot of the time, I don’t even think about it. Last time, I didn’t get to that point until about a month in.

The dreams came early this time – the ones where I am offerred or ask for a cigarette or a draw from someone nearby and take it before I remember that I’m on the wagon. Then there is a little panic, a little guilt, and then kind of a vague worry until the dream vanishes or takes me elsewhere. Waking up and remembering that it isn’t so is a pleasant surprise, even if it is accompanied by stronger than usual cravings.

That’s it. I’ll check back in about a week from now & after that, maybe monthly up to a year. Then I might do anniversaries.

Death once had a Near Chuck Norris Experience

I am writing this a tad early for Tuesday morning reading, but as of 1:45 a.m. (or thereabouts) Eastern time, I am 24 hours without a cigarette.

Let me back up a little. This isn’t the first time I quit. In fact, I remember the year I quit as being 2003, because quitting was one of the things that led me into blogging by the end of that year. I found myself needing something to do when I would otherwise be firing one up. Reading the internet made time go by. That eventually led to finding the Dean Blog (Dean for America – remember that?), which in turn gave me the silly idea that I could do something like that.

That was also what started me out juggling.

I was smoke free for two years, halving the “extra” time between goofing off on the internet and goofing off with juggling balls. Eventually, real life took over a lot of that “extra” time, such that I was not spending nearly so much time with my new hobbies. But, it was a mutually reinforcing deal, and I gained some interesting insights from the internet and some cutesy new clowning skills.

I got cocky one day during a vacation in early 2005 and decided I could have a vacation smoke. No big deal – It was only a week’s vacation, and I couldn’t get hooked to the point that I would have problems when I went back to work in that amount of time. Just a couple here and there while it still had that “new” to it that it had when I started as a kid. When there was still a pungent taste and a slightly euphoric buzz. Back to work – back to being a non-smoker. Didn’t work out that way.

Last time I quit pretty much cold turkey. I tried the patch, but I couldn’t keep it on because it irritated my skin, so I threw it away after the first day and just resigned myself to crawling in and out of my own skin for a day or two. Physical activity helped. Every few minutes I would leave my desk chair at work and take a quick walk around the parking lot – quick enough, long enough to maybe break a small sweat – then back to work. If I had to sit still, I found something read-worthy that I could get completely absorbed in. When my hands needed something to hold, the juggling balls came out. When my mouth needed some stimulation I’d break another tooth on chewing gum (seriously – errr). I used a lot of “crutches”, but I really found it didn’t seem so hard that time. I think a lot of it is mindset… the only problem is that mindset is a difficult thing to adjust voluntarily. I think I had it just right that time.

This time, I’m taking the new non-smoking wonder drug (which my insurance doesn’t cover, and that doesn’t seem a wise policy for an insurance company). I’ve been on it almost a month and only started reducing my smoking in the last few days. I went without all day Sunday, but my late night with my buds and the Mollys got me thinking I should start Monday morning. I did. And as I mentioned before, you’ll read this when I’ve been over 24 hours without. (Thank you. Really, you’re too kind). The drug helps (I won’t draw the spammers here by mentioning it’s name)… but I’m working hard on my mindset and on gathering my crutches. This time, the internet is kind of old news, and I can’t get absorbed in it as easily. I’m trying to add a couple of tricks, and maybe a ball, to my juggling repertoire. When I get restless, at “break time” mainly, I head to the gym and do an easy 10-minute wussy work-out. After work, or on weekends, I can work on my newer avocation. You may remember that someone loved me enough to furnish me with a unicycle a couple of years back. I finally started trying to learn it in earnest nearly a month ago, and I’m getting close to the point where I could actually use it recreationally – though I’m still not meeting the most basic “skill level” criteria – I can’t free-mount quite yet – can’t turn 180 degrees – can’t dismount gracefully with the cycle in front. But, as long as there is reasonably level pavement in front of me, I can ride indefinitely – and that feels fantastic, especially remembering what it was like to not be able to pedal it while holding on to something nearby for dear life without it flying out from under me.

I have yard work that needs doing – that will help keep me busy. I have a few other projects I might try. It’s just a matter of wanting it bad enough, and convincing myself that another 30 minutes of staving off the craving will make me a flipping hero of Chuck Norris proportion. Speaking of Chuck Norris, a little known fact: Chuck Norris once punched a man in the soul. Did you know Superman sleeps in Chuck Norris pajamas?

I’ll check in again when day 2 gets behind me.
