Lane Kiffin to Southern California.

I was on the phone with Papaw last night talking about the upcoming Florida vs Kentucky basketball game and he suddenly stopped talking for a minute and then told me that ESPN was reporting that Lane Kiffin was bolting to Southern California. I thought maybe he had taken a little too much hydrocodone and didn’t pay it much attention but suddenly I received a text message from my brother. As soon as I saw that it was from my brother I knew that the Kiffin news was for real. Why else would my brother be sending me a text at 9:00 pm from a hotel room in god-only-knows-where?

Then my phone starting buzzing with texts from damn near everybody who knows me. The news was flowing through the SEC like the winds of Katrina.

One guy sent me this showing the reaction of Urban Meyer.

Another guy sent me this showing the reaction in Southern California.

My two cents to my Tennessee brethren is this. I know this is hard right now but it is really for the best. Lane Kiffin was not going to take you to the promised land. As tough as it seems at this point you now have an opportunity to go out and get a mentally stable coach who can put a team together and keep a team together.

The saddest of the news concerns the upcoming recruits and you can see one mans take on it here

As soon as I heard the news my mind went back to the time when Charlie Pell left Clemson to go to Florida. I live only about 40 miles from the Clemson campus so anything related to Clemson gets good television coverage in my area. I was watching an interview Pell was having on the local NBC affiliate out of Greenville and he was telling the guy that he was not going to leave Clemson. Charlie must have had the airplane tickets in his pocket while doing the interview because he pretty much left the interview and went straight to Florida. I will never forget that. I was amazed that a man could look another man in the eye and lie without as much as an eyebrow twitch. I was only 19 years old at the time and for the last 32 years I have seen it happen regularly.

But still. The steaming pile of shit that Lane Kiffin dumped on Knoxville is worse than anything I have seen from a football coach up to this point. The guy is obviously lacking in character. He has serious issues and really Vols, you need to be glad he is gone.

He was right about one thing. Georgia will never beat Tennessee as long as he is the coach there.

I will pray that Tennessee finds a new coaching staff if ya’ll will pray that Georgia can find a defensive coordinator.

We didn’t have much of a football season but it has been the most interesting post season I can ever remember.

I really didn’t mind the implementation of the excessive celebration penalty so much until the officials started abusing it. Making a cheap ass call like that towards the end of what was a hell of a ball game was uncalled for. I appreciate the fact that even the league officials have admitted that much.

I don’t have a problem with a rule against taunting players or fans or otherwise acting like a complete jack ass when you score or make a tackle.

I do not want all of the emotion taken out of the game. And I do want the call to at least be applied consistently.

And I guess that is the hardest part. A rule is fine until it is you who gets screwed by the rule.

Gators Junior safety Ahmad Black needed a tissue for his issue with Lane Kiffin’s recent comments about Urban Meyer.

Kiffin may have made an illegal uppercut to FL’s Urban Meyer when he suggested that Meyer violated NCAA rules by calling Nu’Keese Richardson while Richardson was on his official visit to Tennessee…but the NCAA claimed that it was NOT illegal and that Kiffins public cries were. So, it was Kiffin in turn who had to publicy apologize…and it was Tennessee who Nu’Keese Richardson signed with.

If you call that logic…then its hard to argue with.

“Several Florida players say photos of Kiffin are posted throughout their locker room, a reminder of what will fuel them come Sept. 19 in the Swamp.”

Kiffin’s response:

“First, I think it’s a neat thing that Tennessee’s logo is all over Florida’s locker room,” …yada yada yada.

Look folks, I have blasted Kiffin in the past for providing bulletin board fodder for ANY SEC team…doesnt matter. Why give someone else extra incentive to beat us??

But the fact is, …when we play the Gators…does it really matter? I mean, can we really pour more fuel on the fire??

Florida isnt alone in this. Kiffin hasnt singled out one single SEC team. He has single handedly trashed every single team in the SEC…(I dont remember much about the Wildcats tho’?)

But what has he done besides that?

What has he done?

I dont know but according to Rivals.com he has managed to recruit possibly one of the best coaching staffs in college football.

Mostly NFL and highly regarded college recruiters are now wearing orange…Now, if you were a kid coming up with a football scholarship waiting on you…would you want people that have been there and done that?

I know I would.

Kiffin spent half of this offseason acquiring his coaching staff…then spent the other half of this offseason acquiring what Rivals.com refers to as the 10th best recruiting draft in the nation.

No small task indeed.

He has managed to rank UT as high as #10 in recruiting this year…just ahead of NCAA National Champs the Florida Gators.

…and he might have nabbed one of the highest touted recruits in the nation with his signing of Brown.

It has been seven years since I have had to deal with this.

I have almost forgotten how to do it. I have spent a good deal of time staring out the window and watching the wind blow and listening to the rain fall.

My favorite Dog blog has locked comments and I don’t blame him.

It was just epic suck.

Damn a number one ranking when the season starts. I never want to be ranked in the top five again in the preseason. Of course Georgia was over rated going into the season but to lose to Tech? Tech is just a team you beat. You don’t even think about it. You just kick their ass and go on to other things.

And I don’t care who you are playing, if you put 42 points on them you had damned well better win and if you don’t then it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that your defensive coaches are not up to the task. Tech scored 10 points on Gardner-Webb and 7 points on North Carolina so I don’t want to hear about what a juggernaut they are.

We had a 16 point lead going into the half and squandered it by giving up 26 unanswered points in the third quarter. I kept pinching myself but I was not dreaming. I have no idea what happened to the defense at the half but surely to God it included salvia.

I miss Reggie Ball.

Tomorrow is the day. The Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. But I heard on the radio yesterday that we are not supposed to refer to the game that way anymore because of the reference to alcohol. Just like we are not supposed to call the Texas vs Oklahoma game the Red River Shootout anymore because of the reference to guns.

We do live in interesting times.

But Georgia vs Florida will always be the WLOCP to me because that is what it is.

Of course it goes without saying that I am proud of UGA regardless of the outcome of any game and will love the Dawgs until the day they throw Georgia red clay on top of what is left of my mortal remains. I love Mark Richt and here is one of the many reasons why. He is a class act, one hell of a coach and a wonderful role model.

Go and get you some Great Wallpaper From The Swamp. I think Tennessee fans will enjoy it as much as I do.

Happy Halloween!!

And for the first time in my life my return has been honored. In the everyday shuffle I somehow missed the fact that Alice had moved her blog. For many, many days I have been going to the old site and there was no Alice. I thought she had given up blogging so I finally sent her an email and found out that she had simply move.

Thanks Alice. The food porn is always marvelous.

Belichick has said that he misinterpreted the league’s bylaws, telling Goodell that he thought it was permissible to use electronic equipment as long as the information was not used in the same game.

…yeah, for for the last 7 years including 3 NFL Championships.

“The rules are very, very clear. There is no need to be more specific or clarify any rules whatsoever” – Jeff Fisher

“For somebody to say that, it’s kind of disgusting. The whole point is if they really cheated. To say he took some steroids and it did help or it didn’t help, that’s never the point. The point is, to all these high school coaches and high school kids and college kids, that if they did cheat, that’s the point” – Mike Martz

This is a pretty good read, …quite damning to the Pats’ beloved coach.

Its interesting to note the NFL’s rules on the time frame allowed in which the coaches can communicate instructions to their quarterbacks…and the fact that the New England Patriots run a ton of no-huddle offensive attacks.

I think they definately need to be investigated further…and not by disgruntled Eagles fan Arlen Specter, but by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell who I feel is trying to sweep this under the rug as quickly as possible.

…Now, should there be an asterisk beside the 01′, 03′, and 04′ Championships?

Should the Vince Lombardi trophies be taken away completely?

Is it fair to the Rams, the Panthers, or the Eagles if Roger Goodell doesnt?

The Patriots were hit hard …but in my opinion, …not hard enough.
