Proliferation Intrigue

As scary as it is, I enjoyed reading this article in the Atlantic, and picturing the spy novels that could come from it. The crumbling remains of the Soviet Empire in Eastern Europe - the scene has an appeal to those of us who don’t have to live there… or stand to be bombed by the stuff being smuggled through there.

I remember when, in 2004, nuclear proliferation was briefly a campaign issue for John Kerry. It turns out his precise locatino by latitude & longitude for a day or two 30 years ago was more important than whether loose nukes get secured. Since then, the issue hasn’t entirely gone away, but it hasn’t been getting much press. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to talk about it some. Even if it isn’t realistic for a non-state entity to assemble a working device right now, someday it will be. How well fissionable materials are controlled will play a big role in whether we see a non-state entity - or even a rogue-state entity - detonate one of them.
