I guess it is safe to assume that we are both also in 100% agreement that there are knuckle dragging mouth breathers on both sides of the spectrum.

We are and anyone who doesn't admit that is lying to themselves (the older I get, the more I realize that there are literally millions of people who lie to themselves constantly). My problem is that in this case, the diehard partisanship from "the paper of record". I mean, it's not like it's the National Enquirer or another tabloid sheet....increasingly, the mainstream press is starting to align itself as the 'answer' to the right's admittedly partisan media (talk radio, some editorial pages, some/most FNC shows & hosts).

I have a huge problem when the NYT becomes (well, became) an advocacy paper instead of a newspaper. And looking at the latest Rasmussen poll & their stock performance, it appears that the public has decided that the jig is up.

It is the fact that somehow, someway he is kin to Saddam.

Sure, just like "Felix" was to hint that Allen was an out-of-touch suburbanite, dining with Muffy and with "esq" at the end of his title. Thing is, it IS his name....what is someone supposed to do, say "Barack Fitzjerald Obama"? So, it's not the same as calling him an actual derogatory epithet, but we're 100% in agreement that the folks using his middle name is to remind folks that it's the same as Saddam's last name.

But there is an absolutely huge portion of the voting population that gets all wild eyed at the mention of Islam or Hussein.

The "Barack" and the "Obama" part bring the Islam thing to the fore-front. Eh, he'll have that out of the way by the convention, where he'll be able to lay out that he's not a muslim & present himself with all the attention that a nominee is granted; all that will easily be an avalanche overriding some goofy e-mail forwards or internet ramblings about him really being a Muslim.

“The demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots.”

Sorta like the NYT running a story on McCain based on hearsay and innuendo.

a stupid guys vote counts just as much as a the vote of a genius

Yeah, but sometimes the really REALLY stupid guy votes for Buchanan instead of punching the hole next to Gore. :)

LOL!

Side note: I can't tell you how many times I've been able to laugh off someone on the internet telling me how stupid so-and-so (that I supported) was by replying "you know, not enough time has gone by since your party's choice for president officially lost the election because your fellow bretheren couldn't figure out out to punch the correct hole next to the proper name, for you to be inclined to demean the mental acumen of your political opponent's or their supporters."

Eh, they have southern jokes, inbred redneck jokes, I guess I have "Gore lost because you guys were too dumb to vote for him" jokes. :)

Buch, I don’t know what’s more gay, that you’ve never watched Happy Days or that you do watch Oprah.

You know. As soon as I clicked on submit comment I thought the same thing. But my wife records Oprah and at night, if there is to be peace in the valley, I watch it with her.

Pointing out the Hussein part isn’t the flashlight that’s going to shine the light on a muslim heritage in his name.

I agree. But ask yourself if his middle name was Elsheshyne do you think the competition would be shouting it out everytime he is mentioned? I am of the opinion that it is not the Muslim heritage attached to the name Hussein that is being insinuated. It is the fact that somehow, someway he is kin to Saddam.

I know you are smarter than that Ricky. But there is an absolutely huge portion of the voting population that gets all wild eyed at the mention of Islam or Hussein.

It kinda reminds me of the Mencken definition of demagogue.

"The demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots."

I think the guys who shout out "Hussein!" and who yammer on and on about "hand over heart during National Anthem" and "he won't wear the lapel pin" are playing on the stupidity of the goofier people in their constituency but hey, a stupid guys vote counts just as much as a the vote of a genius and there are a hell of a lot more stupid people out there than there are people of genius.

Buch, I don't know what's more gay, that you've never watched Happy Days or that you do watch Oprah. :)

When I hear that people freak out about Barack Obama’s middle name being Hussein, I just shake my head. Hussein (or Husayn or Husain) is about as common a name among Arabic and Muslim peoples as Samuel or Brad here in the US.

Well, first of all, Juan Cole is pondscum of the highest order. Secondly, I have a buddy from Egyp & I'll relay a phone conversation we had a decade ago after I called him at work (I'll change his name to protect his anonymity, even though he's now a Ron Paul nutcase):

ME to front desk: Can I speak to Nerul Elsheshyne?
[transfer call]
HIM: Dude, who did you ask for?
ME: You, Narul Elsheshyne.
HIM: DON'T DO THAT! Call me Mike. Dude, they paged me over the intercom.
ME: So?
HIM: Just don't call me that, next time ask for Mike, that's how they know me.
ME: Well, sorry, but that's not your name & I've never heard it as a nickname. Where did that come from?
HIM: I use it at work. It's less ethnic.
ME: Huh?
HIM: Less ethnic.
ME: Oh, okay. So, the Elsheshyne part is as American as apple pie, but Nerul is what's over the ethnic line, eh?

Er, guys, his name is Barack Obama. Pointing out the Hussein part isn't the flashlight that's going to shine the light on a muslim heritage in his name.
