I wonder sometimes if those days ever really existed anywhere but in somebody’s imagination. The situation has deteriorated to the point that sometimes when I step back and look at it I wonder if a person should even become involved in it.

Dave, I hate to break this to you but anyone who thinks the “other” guys (in this case the right wing) are the only ones who don’t care about facts but only for destruction of enemies has blinded themselves. Both wings, as soon as you define yourself as Republican, Democrat, conservative, liberal, right-wing, left-wing, whatever, automatically do whatever they can to win. It’s just a game of excessive pride - there’s no longer anything to do with philosophy, issues, or ethics. And both sides are equally as reprehensibly guilty of it. Guess it depends on one’s definition of “prominent”. The Rosenbergs - no matter what ‘documentaries’ HBO tries to slough off on us - were guilty as sin & were attempting to usurp our gov’t via spying. Could just be a difference of opinion, but when each communist country at the time has called for the demise of the USA, I think that those who join the communist party & hold those countries as ‘ideal’ are indeed working for the destruction of our nation. No, they weren’t planning terrorist acts, they were just seeking to foist a failed system that killed millions upon us, by any means necessary.

Being a member of Al Qaeda isn’t a crime, either. But, I sure as #$@% hope we’re gaining intel on someone who is acquainted with a member of Al Qaeda (a group that has killed millions fewer than communists and communism). Communism wasn’t just “another political ideology”, it was a cause that called for the destruction and decimation of America and all that she stood for.

Sorry - not a fair comparison. Al Qaeda has political, religious, and philosophical goals, but they are chiefly a terrorist organization. Communism is an economic and sociological theory whhch existed before there was an organization known as the Communist Party, and has been an intellectual position in the United States continuousy from well before the Russian Revolution to the present. Few prominent American Communists gave any indication that they cared for a violent revolution here or for the violent overthrow of the government from outside. Instead American Communists worked toward their agenda through legitimate means such as the free press and through pursuing elective office.

This associate of King’s may have been dangerous, and may have presented reasonable suspicion for wiretapping. If so, and if RFK had a warrant, then I have no complaint. If he didn’t - well, FISA wasn’t around yet to clarify all that, but he then would have overstepped his limits under the 4th amendment.

On MLK - I guess I had him mixed up with someone else. He’s the bad guy of that era & I guess I just attribute all the badness from then to him.
