Santana traded to the Mets
The Minnesota Twins finally broke and traded 2 time Cy Young award winner and 1 time Gold Glove winner Johan Santana to the New York Mets yesterday for OF Carlos Gomez, P Philip Humber, P Kevin Mulvey, and P Geolis Guerra. The trade pends on Santana’s passing a physical exam and agreeing to a contract extension before a 72-hour window expires at 5 p.m. Friday…probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 to 6 years at 20 to 21 MM per. I would say that he would almost definately break Zitos’ contract of 126 MM.
This clearly makes the Mets the front runner in the NL East.
The Mets didnt have to part with either Mike Pelfrey or Fernando Martinez because the Yankees pulled Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera out of the deal and the Red Sox pulled Jon Lester and Jacob Ellsbury out of the deal later on in the negotiations.
Had the deal been made earlier with one of the other big market AL teams then the Twins would have probably made out better than they did.
Kudos to Theo Epstein, possibly the best general manager in the game today. He knew the Yankees actually wanted Santana. So he played the same game with the Yankees that the Yankees do with every other team in baseball. He upped the ante. He didnt necessarily want Santana. Epstein just didnt want the Yankees to get him. He did a nice job and didnt have to part with a red cent.
Winner in this trade?
The Red Sox and the Mets.
Loser?
The Yankees.
The Twins?
Time will tell.

Will all due respect to my buddy the Baseball Crank, this is yet another nail into the coffin of MLB’s ‘purity’. No way can the Florida Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, Oakland A’s or KC Royals (among others) compete against teams with unlimited payrolls like the Yankees, Mets & Red Sox.
When each yearly big-name free agent signs among the same 6 to 8 teams, something’s gotta give.
