A logical choice?

I learned something today. At least I think I did.

I was over at Jays place and read his post concerning the nuts who planned to attack Fort Dix. I had agreed with his post. I thought the same thing when I first heard about the attack plans.

But then in the comments it was suggested that when it comes to security a stateside military base is almost as gun free as Virginia Tech.

I was stupefied to say the least. I had always assumed that on a military base everybody was carrying and everybody was just itching to shoot somebody else. All they needed was a good excuse.

If it is true that these stateside military bases are vulnerable then what better place for a terrorist attack? The embarrassment factor alone would be huge. Think about it. United States military base security breached by a pizza delivery guy and a few accomplices. Many soldiers killed before the city police could arrive.

The press would have a field day with something like this.

Something needs to be done. I would hate to be the one that had to explain to the American people that there were plenty of guns on site they were just all locked up and not accessible.

Damndest thing I have ever heard.

I don’t know how many people inside the base are carrying guns, but I can say from professional experience - without divulging too much personal info - that you can’t just walk or drive onto a military base. An attack would have to either be against the perimiter guards, or it would have to penetrate them. Entry to a military base is contingent on having identifying information for the individuals and their vehicles provided in advance by a third party licensed and contracted to do business there. In certain cases, proof of American citizenship is also required. The system could be gamed, but it would be extremely difficult to arrange. Some person or persons (likely the latter) not directly involved in the attack would have to cooperate, and it would be nearly impossible to avoid them being picked up and interrogated.

I’ve often wondered myself why military bases so far hadn’t been attacked. I don’t doubt that eventually someone will do it. But I don’t think they are terribly easy prey.

I don’t know if what is being done is enough, but I agree that if it isn’t then improvements should be made before someone does finagle a way inside.
