Blogging the New Religion

The new AMS blog talks about how to avoid a simple heresey. Those with more time on their hands can listen to an orthodox priestess drone on for a full half hour on the esoteric practice of the coolest religion. I highly recommend the latter for clergy and laypersons alike.

Can’t do the half hour thing but to me common sense is the strongest argument of all that goes against the “man is causing global warming” argument.

Sure man plays a part. But so do termites.

I read over at Balloon Juice where Tim F. said, “Paul, if you can’t get away from the weather = climate fallacy after all your time here then I don’t see much hope for you.”

So if weather does not equal climate I guess it stands to reason that climate does not equal weather.

And when global warming has nothing to do with temperatures it is clear to me that this argument is way, way over my head.

I’ll let the more learned duke it out. I’ll sit on the sidelines eating popcorn and enjoying the show.

Ok… I can understand that type of frustration. But let me ask you this… It doesn’t have to be about global warming science - it could be about anything…

How important is it to you, personally, to know who is right between the scientists and their detractors?

How important is it to “us” as a society to know?

Assuming there is some importance to knowing whether or not there are going to be moderate or severe problems - up to and including large-scale loss of human life - based on our actions or inactions… how do you think “we” should decide the issue in the current political and media environment?

The problem is that the detractors are scientists themselves. So the question comes down to “which group of scientists do you choose to believe?”

Both sides can get over my head in a New York minute. So I have to default to the position that makes the most common sense to me.

I’m begging you. Watch “The Great Global Warming Swindle” and try to imagine yourself as a common, ordinary, high school educated man.

If you can do that I think you will agree that their argument makes all of the sense in the world.

And just like smoking in public the decision, whatever it is, won’t be made by me.

I’ll just have to abide by a decision that is made by somebody else.
