We Did This To Ourselves

The Concern Trolls at RedState:

Instead of trying to play reasonable, you decided to pee in the man’s cornflakes. You pissed him off and he now has your precious policy by the short hairs.

What could we have been thinking? Instead of reasonably genuflecting to Lieberman as he went on Fox News and called Democrats traitorous for asking to stop all the killing out East with no apparent purpose in mind, we got all pissy and ran a successful primary campaign against him, and followed up with a pretty good general election for a Democrat who represents the views of Connecticut. We didn’t even stop to think that he might be entitled by 12 years of incumbency, millions of GOP dollars, and national name recognition to do whatever the hell he wants to on Fox News without interference from people who care about the direction of the country and the party. We peed in the man’s cornflakes! How could we have been so stupid?

Now he’s got us and our policies by the short hairs. He can join the up-and-coming minority party - give them two years to enjoy a Dick-Cheney-Tie-Break majority… until 2008. For one and a half long years, Lieberman can vote against his constituents with a technical majority that will have exactly the same chances of keeping Americans in Iraq as it would have with him voting GOP from the Democratic side of the aisle. Please, someone, let go of my short hairs. We won’t think of running a primary challenge again, ever!

And how scorned will we feel when he goes on Fox News to call Democrats traitors - not as a Bi-Partisan(TM) Moderate Democrat, not as a Connecticut-For-Liebermaner, but as a stalwart ally of Tom Delay and Dick Cheney? Why do we do these things to ourselves?

When did Lieberman call his fellow Democrats traitors (you noted it twice in the post, so I’m assuming that it’s not a generalized synopsis on your part but an actual quote)? That’s pretty harsh, to say the least, & I didn’t recall him saying something like that but I admit ignorance on the matter….I’d take away a great deal of respect for the man if he really did that.

Nothing came up on a quick google search. Help?

BTW, he’s going nowhere. There are these same stories every few years about McCain….they’re just loving all this press coverage, no doubt.

Of course, the above post isn’t an analytical one - it is a sarcastical one… I could have spelled out that he used GOP rhetoric to cast Democrats in a light that would validate winger’s accusations of treason and been more accurate. I could have discussed his other sins that led to the strong primary challenge against him. The other sins that led to us “peeing in his cornflakes” (how dare we?). But I was making fun of RS, not building a case against Lieberman. People who have watched Lieberman know what he does, and if I use “call Democrats traitors” as shorthand for what he actually does, they will know what I am talking about. It certainly wasn’t my intention to decieve. Links anyway:
