I had a debate on Penal Substitution, showing it to be thoroughly unbiblical.

This post reminds me a bit of Carl Jung's ANSWER TO JOB. There if I recall correctly the idea is put forth that in the case of Job, God had lost the capacity for showing mercy and the story of Christ's death was that God owed humanity something--for his ill treatment of Job--which he then tried to make amends for by sacrificing of himself in the Son sent to die.

This book I suppose is a little different than what you are discussing here, but I see some similiarities.
