Science is a beautiful springtime meadow

And religions are the clouds that swirl and careen above it. Sound corny? Wait ’til you read Chris Mooney’s latest. And, of course, I wholeheartedly agree with him. I like and respect the people who see it the other way – that science is a pristine forest and religion the paper mill whose sole agenda is to turn it all into pulp – but I think they’re wrong.

The solo in my head is from Judy Collins – I just have to love her:

Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feathered canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun they rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done, but clouds got in my way

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It’s cloud’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all

  • Love the Judy Collins tune too. I’ve been humming and whistling it all day long. Not a bad earworm to have if you have to have an earworm.
