In my utopia, single people would do as they please, but when they started thinking about raising children, they would settle down in families. The families would be situated as close as possible in their home to their work environments, so that the two blended together and even long hours put in at work would not keep them from their families. In the internet age, a large number should be able to work from a home office or a home storefront. No one would live more than a two hour drive from at least a half dozen members of their extended family, and many would cohabitate in a large dwelling with parts of their extended family. All of this would make marriages more stable, as outside temptations would more often occur in the context of an only semi-private home and work place where others allied to your spouse would be keeping an eye on you. All of this would be better for children, who would have a broader environment of older relatives to help enculturate them and would experience the stability of a close community at home.
I think one of the largest factors in the decline of the American family is the suburb and the isolation of the nuclear family from the extended family and from each other. Sure, lots of other elements are involved, but I think those are two of the biggest.
