… I won’t have much nice to say about her, I’m afraid. I am glad that McCain chose a woman to run with him. I like Joe Biden, but I was rooting for Janet Napolitano for Obama’s running mate. She is a lovely woman. The rest of the information I have about her is either negative, or only potentially positive. But here’s one nugget of good news about McCain’s VP pick:
As the governor of a state that’s renowned for valuing civil liberties, Palin received praise from the American Civil Liberties Union this May for letting a bill pass that prohibits the funding of the implementation of REAL-ID, a federal law that requires states to comply with certain technical standards when issuing drivers’ licenses.
Unfortunately, that statement comes from the last paragraph of this Wired entry detailing Palin’s seeming willful ignorance about an environmental issue that is important to many, apparently chosen in pursuit of hydrocarbon industry money for Alaska. A negative. If she thinks that pursuing the gas & petroleum dollar is more important than the endagerment of polar bears, I can respect that. In some very desperate case, I might even support it. But, unfortunately, she seems to have chosen either to accept or to perpetuate a deception that creates a false sense of compatibility between environmental concern and the urge for more hydrocarbon profit. That’s a shame. But I didn’t write to point out that negative. I’ll do it in the future.
The positive is that she opposed funding REAL-ID, and for that I salute her.
