Caesaropapism Rampant

Americans are said to be cynical about politics. Actually, they are presidential romantics. Which is why they suffer serial disappointments.

The next President, whomever it may be, will not disappoint me. I will not allow it. I have had enough disappointments for the last 8 years to last me two more lifetimes.

I vow to expect nothing and maybe, just maybe, I won’t be disappointed.

  • So, yeah – I don’t think any of us can help being presidential romantics. I don’t look for any great new programs from a new president (though we may end up with affordable health care, which would be nice).

My interest is mainly a reaction against the mind-boggling things done by the current guy. I need to see that we won’t have somebody go further in that direction. If GWB had held on to his campaign promises from 2000 and done nothing else, I would probably not even be interested in politics right now. My leftward temperament would probably wish we had “better” government, but I probably wouldn’t ever think or talk about it.

One way or the other, I feel like the best any of us can do is to try to make a positive difference within our own families and communities, keep good attitudes, and excercise good critical thinking skills. Voting every year or two is a good thing to do, but it’s not very meaningful in the grand scheme of things.
