I noticed some of the interviewees were conservative Christians, and a couple were from Alabama… I’m not even sure this is a Bible Belt thing…

As to the widow’s mite – I think he was giving praise to small donors to his campaign. A bit presumptious when you think about it, though.

Still seems to me that any professing Christian would know what the “smooth stone” and the “widow’s mite” were. But I was raised in the Bible belt so those stories have been told to me for as long as I have been alive.

I kind of hate to take the window’s mite analogy into the realm of politics. That would mean that the government is gonna take everything we have.

Sister, I use some of DE's work at Street Prophets concerning this angle in my original Mike Huckabee post here. I haven't picked up on the language directed specifically at them (rather than at conservative denominations more generally), but I am certainly aware of his ties to the dominionist sects.

The “code” that Huckabee is using is focused largely towards dominionist Christians, not simply evangelicals.
