Certainly nothing to brag about. But it does bring my total weight loss this year to 51 pounds. Since I lost 8 ounces the month before I guess I could say that I lost four times more weight this month than last. But I won’t even pretend to be satisfied.

I did go to a doctor at my wife’s relentless insistance a couple of weeks ago. My heart checked out fine. My blood pressure checked out fine. But of course he wants me back in a few weeks to do a stress test and blood work. I might go. I might not. I wanted to wait until I was 50 to go in and get all my tires kicked and my fluid levels checked but a mysterious dizzy spell moved the visit up by 7 months. It had been years and years since I had last seen a doctor. Going to the doctor was like throwing away a 55 game hitting streak but when Mama ain’t happy there ain’t nobody happy so I hung my head and succumbed.

The doctor told me not to be concerned about my weight plateau. He said that if I would just work to not put the weight back on it would be an accomplishment. He told me that I would be better to have not lost the weight than to lose it and then gain it back. And he told me that he had many, many more patients with far worse weight problems than I have.

I am no stranger to weight loss. I have lost it and gained and lost it and gained it all of my life. I am a stranger to keeping it off.

I am proud that Jay has added us to his blogroll. I look to Jay for inspiration. It was his words that kicked something loose in my mind back in December of last year and made me commit to losing at least a pound per week in 2007. Jay is a “Dad, gun nut, motorhead, shaved-head biker with a foul mouth and a bad attitude. Foolishly clinging to the notions of self-reliance and free will in the land of the perpetual nanny…”. At least that is the way he describes himself. And after reading his blog for a while now I have no reason to question that description. If he ever publishes his road rage rants I will buy two copies of the book. And by the way, Jay has lost one hell of a lot of weight so he knows the path well.

Ricky burned out on politics but says he may kick start his blog and discuss only things like nutrition and family. I hope he can find the time. He is a good man to have in your corner and he definitely knows nutrition.

I had really hoped to be between 250 and 260 pounds by the time football season starts but that ain’t gonna happen. There is no way that I can eat less than I am currently eating and still retain the will to live. So I am going to keep doing what I am doing and let the chips fall where they may. If I start gaining weight I will make some changes but until then I am just going to keep on keeping on.

That’s all I can do.

  • Okay, y’all gotta stop saying these nice things about me. My head’s not gonna fit through the doorway if’n folks keep writing like that… :)

Seriously, buck, thanks for the kind words. Sorry I haven’t added you guys sooner, actually. I *did* mention I was lazy, right? :)

And once again, congrats on the weight loss. Keep at it. I’m sure you’ll be at 250 – 260 before you know it!

As I said at Jay’s, I’m at a plateau as well. So, I’ve tweaked a few things to ‘shock’ my body & am awaiting the initial results. The first 5 days brought a quick reduction in the % body-fat, so things are beginning off well, but this week it’s stalled again. And, this hurts to type, but I’m regrettably forced to look at my…..weight….and monitor it because I’m looking to drop a few pounds of fat & simply maintain muscle (can’t really gain muscle if you’re consuming fewer calories than burning….it’s possible, but about as probable as someone 5’2″ being able to dunk a basketball).

We’ll both break through the barrier. The human body is a marvelous thing and ours is trying to adapt to what we’re doing to it so that it doesn’t change….so, we gotta keep throwing different things at it to keep the momentum going.

On a side note: took a quick vacation in Pigeon Forge over the 4th: Johnny Carino’s is a great Italian restaurant. Found out that there’s one 30 min. from my home so I now have a new ‘cheat’ restaurant whenever I want to treat myself.

And thanks for the (too) kind words.

Johnny Carino’s is a great Italian restaurant.

I cheated once last month at a place called Shane’s Rib Shack. I had forgotten how good ribs were. I only ate 1/4 rib as opposed to my old standard full rack.
But I am tweaking it a little this month myself even though I swore I was not going to do that. I will somehow retain my will to live. I absolutely have to get to 274 by mid-August. Here I am bustin’ my ass just to get to where Jay was when he started.

Actually, I don’t think a ‘splurge’ day would do you harm. Your body has obviously adjusted to the decreased caloric intake and is now trying to ‘get by’ with what you’re giving it — much like all those people who go on quasi-starvation diets and brag “I lost twelve hundred pounds in three weeks”, only to gain it back twice-fold within a year because all they did was temporarily starve & then watch their body pack on the fat because it did what it’s supposed to do & shut down the metabolism to ‘get by — so a jolt or two won’t hurt.

A few bursts of high-intensity exercise (which could mean a brisk walk that makes one’s heart race, as my Tues. walk did…wow, I’m getting old) would also shock the system.

Seriously, though, I’d say you’re due for a day of hedonism and gluttony. Your body won’t know what to do if it were to be hit by, say, 5K calories because it’s used to less than half that, so it’d kick into gear short-term and burn it off. That’s a good tweak. I think the exercise is a bad tweak in comparison, but they both can do wonders.

Throw on an entire rack of ribs & see what happens a week later. My guess is it does you no harm & probably a bit of good mentally as well as satiating the taste buds.

Heck, I’m doing with a LOT less nowadays & am drinking a lot of my protein in order to burn off some fat and I know that I ‘need’ that splurge day to look forward to. Not that I’m obsessing over a large burrito with sauce on Saturday or anything.

    Tick, tick, tick.
