Tête-à-Tête-Tête

The blessed college football season ended last night with Florida giving the state of Ohio something to think about during the off season.

Being a Georgia Bulldog fan makes pulling for the Florida Gators a very difficult thing to do sometimes. But last night I had no problem with it at all.

I was worried about the game because I had gotten all caught up in the media hype that always surrounds teams like Ohio State. Perennial media darlings.

I had told my brother that I expected Ohio State to win because “Florida really isn’t that good”. I revisited that statement this morning and there is still some truth in it. When you shine the light of the SEC on Florida they were really just a slightly above average team.

My mediocre Bulldogs played them to within a touchdown. You all know how Tennessee played them. Vanderbilt gave them all they wanted. South Carolina should have beaten them and hell, Auburn did. The only teams that Florida beat as badly as they beat the Buckeyes were Central Florida, Western Carolina and Southern Miss.

Two things did hurt Ohio State. The early loss of Ted Ginn, Jr and the fact that they had not played a football game in 51 days. Take away those two items from the equation and Florida only wins by 21 points.

I am sure Troy Smith is looking at his Heisman Trophy this morning and wondering what hit him last night. 4 for 14 for 35 yards and an interception. 82 total yards for the night for the Buckeye offense. It was a joy to watch. Take away a fluke kick-off return and a questionable roughing the passer penalty and I doubt Ohio State would have even scored.

So if any of your friends or co-workers ever tell you that the SEC is overrated just hand them a copy of this and have them read it to you aloud.
