Back at it
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving holiday.
For the first time in my life I actually participated in Black Friday. It was a memorable experience to say the least. I found myself standing inside a Walmart at 4:55 AM on Friday. It was a hoot. People were running and grabbing boxes and so many of the women had their game face on. I didn’t know whether I should attribute it to herd mentality or mass hysteria.
I got a 32″ flat screen TV for $598.00. It is now my dream come true. For years I have had to watch football from my bed using a cheap set of low powered binoculars. The set in my bedroom was only 19″ and was so far away from me that I needed the binoculars to keep abreast of what the down and distance was. Most folks see this as a form of mental illness and it may have a name but my wife was sick of it to say the least. But I guess it could be a bit unnerving to be in bed with a guy watching football on TV with binoculars. But until Friday it was the closest to big screem television viewing that I had. So now I am happy. Surely there is not anything wrong with that.
Of course the wife had to pick up a couple of other must have gifts for the girls. I was in the store for 33 minutes and came out minus $800.00. But it was worth every penny. As soon as we got back out to the truck my wife looked at me sheepishly and asked, “Are you gonna take me to Belks now?” I laughed and headed in that direction.
I sat in the Belks parking lot and watched the madness there from afar. It was wonderful to see so much economic activity at such an early hour.
We stopped at Hardee’s and got a couple of breakfast biscuits but my wife had gotten so excited that she could only eat half of hers. That means I got to finish it off. Life is good sometimes.
We were back home before 7:00 AM and I had the television set up and was on the disc golf course before 8:00 AM.
For the past 4 days the time I was not eating or playing disc golf I was watching football. God, what a glorious time of year for the football junkie. The highlight of the holiday was Georgia’s win over Tech.
It was a wonderful four days. I thought about the birds this morning on my way to work. Everyday this time of year at exactly 7:00 AM (you can set your watch by them) waves and waves of birds fly over the disc golf course. Huge black undulating waves of little black birds. They just keep coming and coming and coming. This has to be what inspired Hitchcock. It is fascinating to watch. I imagined them doing their thing this morning as I am now having to do mine.
I am sure that they did not miss me this morning as much as I missed them.
